There are no larger cities (outside of Russia) that are more northerly than Oulu which has over 190,000 inhabitants. It is considered one of Europe's "living labs", where residents experiment with new technology (such as NFC tags and ubi-screens) at a community-wide scale. The Oulu Region is well known for its technology, the hi-tech growth having started after the establishment of Oulu University. There are two science parks in the region: Technopolis Plc, Scandinavia's first science park, and Medipolis Ltd., as well as a technology centre, Ii Micropolis Ltd. The region is home to many hi-tech companies, such as Nokia, and the sector currently employs over 10,000 people.
The University of Oulu is hosting the Symposium in the Oulu City Theather. The University of Oulu is an international science university which creates innovation for the future, well-being, and knowledge through multidisciplinary research and education. The University of Oulu researches people and culture in a changing living environment, as well as opportunities that new technology provides for improving the well-being of people and the environment. Founded in 1958, our research and education community is 16 000 students and 3000 employees strong, and one of the biggest and the most multidisciplinary universities in Finland. The ten faculties, the many departments and the specialised research units of the University of Oulu create the foundation for multidisciplinary research, innovation and training of experts for demanding professional tasks. Our total funding for 2014 was 217,8 million Euros.

The symposium organisers will arrange for a full day trip to the City of Rovaniemi at the Arctic Circle. It will include visits to the Arktikum Science Centre, the Santa Claus Village and a reindeer farm. Registration will be available through the online registration system.
With its long beaches and carefree beach days, Nallikari is the best place to enjoy your summer holiday. After a relaxed day of playing in the water, all the entertainment of Oulu is just around the corner. Nallikari offers different kinds of things to do, every day of the year.
The Market Square area along with Rotuaari Promenade and the other streets in downtown Oulu form an urban living room. This zone comprises the intersecting streets Kauppurienkatu and Kirkkokatu, the Rotuaari Promenade and its surrounding streets, and the main shopping district with its department stores and boutiques. There are also a wide variety of high-calibre cafés and restaurants on offer. Cultural events are organised in Rotuaari Square all year round.
The Koiteli region is surrounded by rolling forested hills and rich vegetation, and its many islands provide excellent opportunities for fishing, canoeing and kayaking, and trekking. The Koitelinkoski rapids are part of the free-flowing River Kiiminki. The rapids are about four kilometres from downtown Kiiminki and a quick 24-kilometre drive from Oulu.
The Tietomaa science centre has Åström's leather factory and 19th-century large-scale industry to thank for its distinctive landmark - its tower. So don't forget to take a ride in our glass elevator with a view over Oulu. Our exhibitions with changing themes from different scientific fields guarantee a thought-provoking experience at Finland's first science centre.
The island of Hailuoto is unique because of its abundant nature and well-preserved old buildings. Attractions and activities are free to be explored by tourists, but you can always take guided tours as well. Sights include an old lighthouse, interactive nature exhibition, a museum, a church, sandy beaches and bird watching spots.

The activity park offers everyone the chance to appreciate the joy of moving! Get your heart pumping with the Duudson and Hevisaurus activities, or at the Freestyle Hall and GameArena. The Freestyle Hall offers a unique space for all levels of freestyle enthusiasts, from beginners to the more experienced. At the GameArena, you can try your hand at ice hockey, Finnish baseball, football, floorball, golf, and fluorescent mini golf. Or scale the SkyWalk climbing wall with the safety of a transparent net.
Spend a summer's day cruising around the sea off Oulu or on the region's lakes. M/S Alexandra leaves from the pier in the Market Square. There are a range of sea cruises around Oulu, from 90-minute trips to 4-hour cruises. M/S Angelina cruises down the River Oulu during the summer. You can board M/S Angelina from the Värtönranta pier and, for example, get acquainted with Oulu's old tar transport route. Both ships can also be hired for private cruises. Alexandra can carry up to 140 people, and Angelina 95.
